Championship show underway!

The big Championship show for 2010/11 is underway! Carolyn Bailey has taken a photo of a sample of the prizes available to win for MEPSA showers. A veritable embarrassment of riches, I'd say! Thank you to all of our supporters, and good luck to all our entrants!

MEPSA Tackmaking contest

MEPSA is holding a model horse tackmaking contest as a MEPSA Benefit. This contest is open to ALL. Winner will be decided by popular vote. Voting will be open to ALL. One person = one vote. Voting will be done on the modelequines blog at http://modelequines.blogspot.com You do not have to join any group in order to vote. This is a great way to get your work shown to a potentially huge audience, win a great award, and help MEPSA put on a terrific Championship show.

Contest Rules

1) All tack must have been made by the entrant. All major parts of any sets must have been made by the entrant. For example, you may not make a saddle pad, and enter someone else's saddle with your saddle pad as an entry. However, if the saddle is your work, a saddle pad made by someone else (and noted) may be included as part of one entry. The tack may be previously made, or made especially for this contest. Your identity, as tackmaker, should be kept under wraps until the voting is over. Please don’t tell everyone which entry is yours. Guessing is part of the fun!

2) Tackmaker may enter any type tack (Western, English, Native costume, historical, circus, other) in any scale, and the tack may be anything, ranging from a halter and lead set to a complete set with saddle. We will have two divisions- Division A for an entry including a saddle or vehicle, and Division B for entries not including a saddle or vehicle. You may enter one entry in each division if you wish.

3) All finished tack may have a clear digital or scanned photo of each side, on a model, sent in to MEPSA- Carolyn Bailey- foggynote@yahoo.com - at MEPSA can do the photographs for you if needed, when we get the tack.

4) ALL entered tack becomes property of MEPSA to raise funds or use as Championship show awards. This is a MEPSA Benefit contest. Tackmaker must send the finished tack to MEPSA upon completion- Carolyn Bailey, 971 Trailside Ln, Bartlett, IL 60103-5159- at their own expense. There is no other fee to enter.

5) Winner of Division A- saddle or vehicle included- will be awarded a certificate for a free custom rider doll from the super talented Joan Yount of O-U-Doll Studio. Check her site at : http://www.o-u-dolls.com/ OR a gift certificate for a Herden calf from Carol Herden of C.O.W.S! Your choice.

6) Winner of Division B (entry without saddle) will receive the prize not chosen by the Division A winner, or a NIB Breyer model, winner's choice.

7) The contest will be publicized heavily on the Internet and in model horse groups. Please help spread the word!

8) Deadline for producing your tack and entering it is August 15th, 2011. Voting will take place at the end of August or the beginning of September. We will accept entries from now until August 15th.

9) MEPSA appreciates an intent to enter statement as soon as you determine that you will enter, sent to Laurel Dedes- dserthorse@aol.com This is not binding, but will give us an idea how many entries to expect.

Results of last contest

There were nine great entries for the Prop contest, ranging from an adorable Stablemate scale barrel prop and a diorama style log jump, to a Trail and Game set, and a intricate castle jump in Traditional scale. The winner of the contest was the Trail and Game set, made by Laurel Dedes. As a MEPSA officer, Laurel donated the prize back to MEPSA to award in the Championship. This is a great way to get your work shown to a potentially huge audience, win a great award, and help MEPSA put on a terrific Championship show.

Contest Rules
1) All props must be put together by the entrant, but it may consist of purchased parts, or parts by another artist, with acknowledgment. Of course, the entire prop may also be completely handmade by the entrant. The prop entry may be previously made, or made especially for this contest. Each entrant may enter either one or two props.

2) Prop maker may enter any type prop (Game prop, Backdrop, Trail, etc) in any scale, and the prop may be anything, ranging from a pair of potted plants to a complete Traditional jump set-up. We do ask that your entry fit in a small flat rate USPS box, or be one pound or less.

3) All finished props may have a clear digital or scanned photo sent in to MEPSA- Laurel Dedes- dserthorse@aol.com MEPSA’s Championship Show Coordinator, Carolyn Bailey, will do the photographs for you if needed, when we get the entry, please inquire. Your entry will be judged on the basis of the photo, so a good photo set-up can help your entry win.

4) ALL entered props become property of MEPSA to raise funds or use as Championship show awards. This is a MEPSA Benefit contest. Prop maker must send the finished prop/s to MEPSA upon completion- Carolyn Bailey, 971 Trailside Ln, Bartlett, IL 60103-5159 at their own expense. There is no other fee to enter.

5) Entries are accepted on the condition that the entrant take all reasonable action to preserve their anonymity until the end of the voting. Publication of the contest as a whole is encouraged, but all entrants are prohibited from using any mailing lists, social media or other mass communication methods to identify the artist associated with any entry before or during voting. Any entrant found to be violating the spirit of keeping artists unnamed during the active contest, or asking others to do so for them, risks disqualification. MEPSA is aware that family or friends may know, but they should be requested to also keep the spirit of the contest, and preserve the anonymity of the entrant(s).

6) The winner of the contest will be awarded their CHOICE of one of these- a brand NIB Enchanted Forest jumping pony, OR a custom etched Stablemate by Corina Roberts, OR an Appaloosa custom Stablemate Pacer by Karen Dietrich! MEPSA Writing contest!

ANNOUNCING- MEPSA WRITING CONTEST!


A long standing tradition at MEPSA is the production of an annual book presenting Championship results, along with club news and informed articles that help to advance model equine photo showing. Included may be Topics or articles on equine breeds and performance, on photography, or on model horses.

MEPSA serves halter showers of Original finish plastic and china, Artist Resin, and custom model equines, as well as performance showers, providing a competitive series of seasonal qualifying shows culminating in an International Championship. In order to maintain the high standard of quality of our keepsake “Championship” book we need quality articles. We know there is plenty of knowledge in the hobby, and we want to tap into that. This year, no one ran for the office of book coordinator. Therefore we need to start putting the book together early, so as not to hold up publication after the championship!

SO.. We are holding an exciting contest for article submissions!This contest will close at the end of January, so DON’T WAIT!
Articles can be on anything model or horse related that would be relevant to model equine photo showing.
The best article chosen by an impartial judge (entries will be anonymous) will win a

$100 gift certificate for a Stone Design-A-Horse model!

Articles must be original and the author must be able to assign publication rights for the article and photos to MEPSA.
The championship show book is a publication that will be available for sale through Lulu (a small publisher).
The text (3000 words or less) should be provided as a .doc or .txt file and the photos should be submitted as separate .jpg files. File names should include your last name with a serial number (example: Jones1.jpg) Send the articles to Elizabeth Jones at: ubersu4u@yahoo.com.


Advice to writers:

Write about what you know best! How can your knowledge be applied to model equine photo showing? Here are some examples of the kinds of articles we would like to see:
· Describe an unusual breed(s) [example: an article on Australian horse breeds] and which models make a good fit
. How would you customize a model to better represent it?
· Choose a breed and discuss conformation/character of various molds that could be shown as that breed.
(For example the many Morgan models or TB models: which ones make the best models and the specific conformation faults we should consider)
· Model breed assignment
· Western Performance classes
· Photography tricks
· The making of artist resins: who are the artists?
· You name it!

Do your research- take your pictures ...
this is your chance to get published.
A qualified judge will choose the best article, and what a great prize!
We will publish as many articles as we can. MEPSA reserves the right to use any articles unpublished in 2011 in subsequent years.

To be included in the contest, articles must be received by Elizabeth in digital form by the end of January! If you do not receive confirmation, please contact me.

The fine print:
When you submit your article and pictures, you assign MEPSA the right to publish the material in print or on the web.

Full acknowledgement will be given for authorship and photography.
If the material is published elsewhere (in print or on the web), this should be disclosed when you submit your article.
You must obtain the rights to publish images that do not belong to you.
